  1. If you are using Windows XP:

Go to your Control Panel, and click on Regional and Language Settings. Click the Languages tab, then under Text Services and Input Languages, click the "Details..." button. A new window will pop up where under Installed Services, you will want to click the "Add" button. Another window will pop up, and you should choose "Japanese" from the drop-down box. Click the "OK" button, then you should see a branch of info entitled "Japanese" in the scroll box beside the buttons. Then, you will go back up to the Default Input Language section and select "Japanese - Microsoft IME Standard (et cetera)".

You will most likely want to be able to type in Japanese in programs like Notepad also, so if you want you can go to the "Advanced" tab and select "Extend support of advanced text services to all programs".

You can then select the "OK" button which will close that window.

Also, if you want to display Japanese websites made using Flash, then on the remaining window (Regional and Language Settings), go to the "Advanced" tab and select "Japanese" from the drop-down box under Language for Non-Unicode Programs, then click the "OK" button.

Then you're all done! Once you restart you should see an extra set of buttons on your start bar. When you want to type in Japanese, select the EN button and choose "Japanese". Then select the pen button and choose the option at the top (should be H for Hiragana). The one below it is K for Katakana, then L for Large Roman letters (English or Romaji), A for half-width Katakana, P for normal-width Roman letters, and D for direct input (as if you were typing normally on the English setting).

Unfortunately this only applies to Win XP. If you need a Vista tutorial, let me know. I can borrow a friend's. :)
