His name is Orian John Henderson and his nickname is Daws.

Do I write it Orian "Daws" John Henderson or Orian John "Daws" Henderson?

  1. 1) You can do it any way you want.

    2) the stone cutter probably has a designer that can show you examples of how others have done it

Since your grandfather did not specify how he would want it laid out, do it however you'd like.

If I were designing the headstone, I'd write out his full given name on the top line. Put his nickname in quotes centered on the second line and Beloved Grandfather on the third followed by the years his life included. For example:

    Orian John Henderson

              "Daws"

    Beloved Grandfather

          1929-2008

  2. I think Orian John "Daws" Henderson sounds and looks better...Sorry for your loss!

  3. I like what CHos3n suggested:

    Orian John Henderson

    "Daws"

    Beloved Grandfather

    1929-2008

That's how I've usually seen nicknames listed on tombstones in the past.

  4. I agree that the second way is more correct.  Usually, a nickname doesn't interrupt the given name as it is written out.

  5. I don't think there is a correct way.  It is whatever looks best to you.  I think the first one would be what I would do.

  6. the 2nd option looks & sounds better to me, but i'm not sure of the "correct" way to write it out.

  7. i believe you would have to have an engraver do it. i also believe it would be his given first and middle name then the nickname and finally his last name
