"People believe the motion of the planchette [the pointer] is explained by the ideomotor effect. A typical session with the board has two or more people touching the planchette with at least one hand each, so that no single person need apply much force in order for the group as a whole to cause it to move. Each person experiences the illusion that the planchette moves under its own power."

Or more simply, they don't really work as a "gateway to the dead" Could you really buy a mass produced Parker Brothers trademarked product if it actually was a gateway to the dead?

According to people who make and use them, a Ouija board is used to contact the dead. People rest their fingers on a heart-shaped plaque or an ordinary drinking glass, ask the usual questions, and a spirit is supposed to move the indicator about the board to spell out answers to the questions the users ask. But the last time I used one makes me question just who's really controlling it. The indicator spelled out words all right, but I was the one doing the spelling even when I decreased the pressure of my fingers on the indicator. Now, if that didn't totally freak you out, you might try it yourself. Scared the h**l out of my sisters!
