How do PS2 cheats work?

Question

when you look up a cheat for...lets say the game "thrillville"...and they site says press square,triangle...etc in a certain order...i don't know what they mean by that...can someone explain?

there are buttons on your game controller that match it. like the triangle infront.... circle.... just press em quick in dat order!
