  1. Peanuts grow from a low-bearing shrub. The fruit you're referring to as peanut grows underground. When it's ready to harvest you pull the plant from the ground and pick the fruits off the roots.  


  2. Peanuts are not actually nuts like acorns, but are related to peas. The pea family is known as leguminiosae and besides peas and beans, it also includes things such as Ash trees. One distinguishing characteristic of the family is the fruit, a pod containing several seeds. The peanut is somewhat unique in the sence that it actually plants its own seeds. After the flower is polinated, a long tendril grows with a sharp point on the end. This pushes its way into the soil and the peanut develops underground. Peanuts are native to South America, I think, but are now grown all over the world. America, Africa and China grow most of the world's peanuts.
