  1. Well, it's hot so any manufacturing requires air-conditioning.  Especially anything computer related.  It's an Island chain, so anything traded needs to travel by boat or airplane.  It's regional competition is stiff and countries like Vietnam are hungry for jobs.

The tourism culture can taint things if they continue down the Bangkok s*x tourist road.  I know many people who wont visit parts of Thailand because it's too disturbing to see all the 'teen massage' parlors lining main avenues.

Politically I know they've had problems with those  extremists on the southern islands.  The biggest problem I would say though is just that people who leave either don't come back or end up in either some middle eastern oil barron or chinese family's kitchen cupboard  cleaning house for a dollar a day to send home.  What is there more than 11 million foreign workers from the Philipines.  So clearly for geographical or socio economic reasons they aren't finding adequate work at home.  There's all this urban development and wealth surrounded by people with very little.  All the islands covered in jungles filled with pirates and terrorists.

I wouldn't be sure if I'd say at this stage it geographical settings affect it as much as they did historically.
