  1. A cordless phone (handset) is a radio transceiver (transmitter/receiver) that operates on two radio frequency transmission carriers (RF carriers) simultaneously. It simultaneously receives and transmits at different frequencies, so you can carry on a conversation with someone, where each of you can always hear what the other is saying.

The handset communicates by RF signals with the base station (where you set the phone down to charge). The transmit channel from the handset is received by the base station and is turned into an audio signal (your voice). The base station converts the voice of the person on the other end of the phone into the RF receive channel, which you then hear on your handset.

The phone line that plugs into the back of the base station is then how the system is connected to the regular phone lines.

BTW - if you didn't have two RF channels (one for transmit and one for receive) that could operate simultaneously, only one person could transmit (talk) at a time. You would then have the equivalent of a walkie-talkie.
