I'm a student pilot and am pretty familar with Air Traffic Control procedures and communications. When I was riding on the trolley yesturday in downtown SD, it made me wonder if there is some sort of "Rail Traffic Control" or someting similar that these trains use. Do any train people here have any idea?

  1. Not familiar with the San Diego trolley but mainline rail has train dispatchers who act as ATC on the rails using essentially non radar procedures.

  2. Well san diegos trolley communicat by computer you see there is this tower in the station and the computer comuunicates to the trolley and that makes the engine start to go and all the driver has to do is lead the way to the pit stop.

    hope this could help you.=)

  3. They usually just use radios like taxi drivers or police officers.

  4. they have radios of course and sometimes even safety devices

that would stop the train/trolley if the controlman/person runs a stop signal

and yes they should have RCC area as well
