How do U tell if your tv is 480, 1080p or 1080i or whatever the resolution things are called?

  1. The only accurate way I know of is to look at the owner's manual or Google the model number.

    480 is Standard Definition (SD) which is usually unconverted analog.  720 and 1080 are High Definition (HD) resolutions; they will also be wide screen.

    There are two things at which to look.  One is the >capability< of the TV.  This is the types of signals the TV can use.  You want 1080 here.

    The other is the >screen resolution<.  This is the highest resolution the screen can display and is a function of how the screen is made.  If it hass 1080 lines of pixels, it is a 1080 display.  If it has 720 lines of pixels, it's a 720 display.  Obvioulsy that can't be changed after the fact.  If you have a 720 display on a 1080 capable set, the TV will convert the 1080 signal to work on the 720 screen so you will still be able to see everything available.
