How do UPS/FedEx deliveries work if you have a driveway security gate?

We are going to install a security gate on our driveway with a solar powered automatic opener on it. It will have a key pad to enter a code to open it. How does this work with shipping deliveries? Also things like fire/police/ambulance? I understand the opener can have multiple "codes" so do we keep one on file with emergency and shippers or is their a way to add the "gate code" to the return address field on shipments? Thanks!

  1. in some areas the drivers have been given the codes

    for entry

(I wont advise putting a code on the package

thats would be a open invitation for a burglar

or when the driver comes (doesnt your security gate

come with a inter-comm? he would just use that to let you know

hes outside and will needd to buzzed in

  2. Most delivery businesses have "Delivery instructions" that can be placed with the shipper. Not sure about emergency services so I would contact them.

  3. i am a fedex driver  myself and gate codes are hard to come by most drivers dont even bother stoping if there is a gate but when u order something make sure u have your contact info correct and make sure they have it printed on the shipping label cause the driver will attempt it 3 times and after the third fedex sends a postcard saying were u can pick up your package at unless u want another attempt

  4. There's a fairly new invention called the PHONE.

  5. Normally, you would provide an intercom system at the gate that would give arriving visitors, including delivery drivers, a means to contact someone when they arrive. You could try including a gate code on your shipping instructions, but don't be surprised if you miss some deliveries.

Big companies like UPS and FedEx don't want to hassle with keeping track of gate codes for everyone on their routes - this could add up to hundreds or even thousands of different codes.

Depending on where you live, there is usually a city or county ordinance that requires people that have gates to install some type of approved access device for emergency responders such as the police and fire department.

Some cities require that you install an "opticon", which is a device that is activated by an emergency vehicle's stobe light. Other cities require that you install a special key box (often called a "knox box") for emergency access. Check with your local jurisdiction to see what, if anything, is required.
