Question:

How do YOU clean tricky used items?

I buy almost everything used (from thrift stores) and usually can just toss things in the wash or scrub them in the tub, but...

I usually scrub soft fabric shoes (cloth or fiber) with a carpet or laundry detergent. For more rigid shoes (i.e. dress shoes), I spray them with Lysol disinfectant and then polish the outside parts. Is there a better method, should I use baking soda or a product designed specifically for shoes?

Also, occasionally I'll find an article of clothing that has absolutely no indication of how to clean it or what it's made of. Should I just wash these by hand and hope for the best, or should I opt for dry cleaning?

If you have any suggestions, or a method that works for you, I'd be much obliged to hear about it.

Thanks!

  1. I soak in tepid water & mild detergent before a low degree wash.

  2. The way you clean shoes is probably one of the best ways and kills germs at the same time.

As for articles of clothing that you can't identify stains you could using vinegar. Its safe on material. Delicate things can be washed gently by hand with baby shampoo.
