I am interested in how OTHER people decide what audition pieces to use. I have experience in performing monologues etc....but i haven't ever auditioned on something where you aren't given a background or idea of some kind. Can you just rock up and do a monologue from a character of a simlar age to the character your auditioning for? Or do you use anything that you feel can show your skills?

  1. Well first i see what genre in Acting im Good At. and I choose which monolouge fits into me not teh character and then i use what i have to make the character..

    EXAMPLE:

I am not a sporty guy so i choose a monolouge about a kid who complains to the princaple about getting rid of Gym.

    GOOD LUCK

    EAMIL ME YOUR SUCCESS

  2. first i never just toss a monologue aside if it looks too long for the time limit because it could be a really great one for me and you can always edit them to fit your time

now i look at what i am best at and what type of character i ussually play well FOR AUDITIONS because i want to look my best so id do what im good at like a dramatic kinda rebelious piece fits me pretty well but if it is for an acting class i pick a character im not so great at like im not that good at being the preppy valley girl or the damsel in distress so id pick those so i can challenge myself and become more versitile FOR CLASSES

you always want to be able to play many characters and not just be the same person in all of your work (thats what angelina jolie tends to do and thats the only reason i dont like her) so for your audition id go with a very well writen peice that you are confident you can persue the character well and have been successful at portraying before but at home id practice exploring other genres and characters that arent something youd normally choose

also i write my own monologues occasionally which gets my juices flowing more so to speek

i also love to improvise monologues because it really lets me practice acting as reacting and live in the moment

    best of luck!! happy dreaming!!

    EDIT

it is also very important that you have a monologue that you can very easily do a character analysis on because without a character analysis there is no motivation and its very difficult to get into character that way

  3. I do what I'm good at. Your main goal should be to always, make yourself look good. So I pick something that I know I can succeed at. If they don't give any information about the character you just make your own and try to incorporate stuff you can do. PRACTICE, is the main key, acting, really, its not that hard. You'll get it eventually if you practice

    good luck

  4. If you know nothing about the part, choose a monologue that best presents your abilities - one that you feel you can become involved with.

  5. I am and actress and what I do is pick out three monologues and do them for three people then ask them which they like best.    The one that gets picked the most you should do

  6. As an actress sometimes it's a good thing to take risks. So sometimes it's good to do things that you aren't totally comfortable with. It's also good to use something called "Inner Resources". This is when you perform an action because you have done this before in your life (like coughing; I know what it feels like/looks like/sounds like to cough so I can easily act a cough).

Usually when I'm picking a monologue I try to figure out some background info on the character I most want to play and find a monologue with a similar character so I can show the castig directors that I can play that type of person.

    I hope I helped!

  7. You need to find a monolouge that both highlights your strengths as well as is the closest to the charater you are auditioning for.

It is essential that the reviewers genuinely see you as the character you are auditioning for, not just some random monolouge you know by heart and know how to portray.  With the wealth of plays and screenplays out there to choose from study up on the character type you are going for and choose a part that reflects that character.

Oh and STAY AWAY FROM WELL KNOWN MONOLOGUES.  I know its in bold but if you do a well known monologue then you will be facing every actor/actress that's ever done that part that the panel can remember and that's never good, as well as boring the reviewer's.  Can you imagine how many auditions that have used Shakespearean plays or sonnets. Choose a not so well known production and use that to preform in an audition.  If you plan on doiung this professionally also i would suggest in an effort to be better take a couple psychological  courses at college they will give you a wealth of knowledge to draw on for an audition as well as coming up with a picture of the Character.

  8. Use something totally relate able to you! It would make your performance more real and make you feel better about performing it and the number one mistake actors make about monologues is that they perform monologues that they hAtE! so definatley get one you personally can relate to and one that you like, don't be afraid to spend time finding that perfect monologue!

    -Good luck

  9. before auditioning i like to have an idea of WHAT i am auditioning for.

I have an upcoming audition for The Shadow Box..

the character I am gunning for is Beverly...

so i read the shadow box and Beverly is a drunken *****..

so i found a monologue which brings out the bi^chy side of me
