  1. 1. Plug in the Camera (to the computer)

    2. Open iMovie

    3. Click the video camera icon (somewhere on the window)

    4. Click import (make sure you are importing from the camcorder, not a webcam)

  2. If you have a mini dvd camcorder….

You will have to finalize your dvd in the camera and then put the dvd in your computer 's DVD burner (top loading only) and then you will have to convert the files (i downloaded handbrake file converter free) and import them into your editing program. Use the HELP feature in your editing program to learn about editing. Once you are ready to burn, your project will be burned to a different DVD and you can file the original away.

  3. You don't use USB to transfer the video. iMovie won't recognize the video from the camcorder coming in the USB port.

Presuming your camcorder uses miniDVD discs and your Mac has a slot loading DVD drive - NEVER EVER put a mini-disc in a slot loader. You will break the drive and scratch the disc.

    You have two options:

    1) Get an Analog/Digital bridge. You will connect the AV cable to the camcorder and the A/D bridge - then connect the A/D bridge to the Mac with a Firewire cable.

    2) Get an external drawer loading DVD - I like

    Then download and install HandBrake

and rip the video into a format iMovie or FinalCut likes... like DV, MP4 or .mov...

You would be having the same issues with MovieMaker if you were using a Windows machine, so no need to worry about that.
