How do a do a disk defragment on vista?

i got a new laptop and im not used to vista yet.

  1. Defragmenting on Vista is by default **scheduled**, so you shouldn't really worry about manually defragmenting. However, you can start the program in your Accessories if you want to run defragmentation manually.


  2. open explorer, right click on a drive (ex. c:/), click properties

    open tools tab, click on defragment now.

  3. Defrag in Vista doesn't show the drive map process like XP did though, so there's no way of knowing how long it going to take.

    Just leave it running until it says it's finished.

    I would still recommend a 3rd party defragger though.

    A good free utility that I use is DIRMS (Do It Right Microsoft).

  4. Go to 'start > all programs > accessories > system tools > disk defragmenter.

    It'll open up a windows - wait for the analyzing disk to finish, then click 'defragment now...'. then, open up another windows, check all boxes and click 'ok'.

    Then just wait for the defragmentation to finish. It should take about 1-2 hours.
