How do a person check to see if a offical check is really or not?

i have a check from a contest and it over 3 grant i want to see if is for real or not

Its probably a scam, as soon as you cash it the person who sent you the check can somehow get you bank info and take all of your money.  BEWARE!!!!!!!

If it came from one of those emails that said you were a lottery winner....congradulations... you just got scammed.  Chalk it up to a life lesson.

1) You cannot win a contest you do not enter

2) There are bad people everywhere.
