How do animals keep from getting lost and confused about where they are?

  1. Do you get lost and/or confused walking or driving around your town? What makes you think it would be any different for an animal? Not only do they have landmarks to go by, they have scent trails, their own and those of other animals, forget looking up an address on a map, they can just use their nose. And then we get into animals with homing instincts and things get really crazy... pigeons, crocodilians, turtles, all kinds of animals, if you move them, they somehow end up right back where they started... sea turtles return to the same beach they hatched on... alligators can find their way home after being tagged and relocated 150 miles or more... and look at what pigeons and other migratory birds do year after year, all thanks to magnetite in their brains supposedly and navigation by the earth's magnetic fields...

    Ain't nature grand?
