  1. Excellent question!!!  Unfortunately, there is no one universal answer, for one because numerous animal species migrate.  depending in their environment animals have evolved a variety of ways to orient themselves and to find the place they migrate to.

The perhaps best known, though not necessarily best understood, migration is that of birds.  Birds travel large distances, crossing continents and large bodies of water.  For their navigation they have been shown to use star constellations at night as well as landmarks during the day.  Birds also use magnetic field orientation, a process that apparently is light dependent and involves both retinal and a forebrain region active during magnetic field orientation (http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi%...

Elasmobranchs and some other "fishes" also use the earth magnetic field to navigate.  Their mechanism is quite a different one though.  They have electroreceptive cells in pores that are distributed all over the nose and parts of the head Ampullae of Lorenzi).  By moving through the earth magnetic field they are inducing an electric current that the can measure with these cells.  Depending on whether the animal swims in an easterly or westerly direction the current will flow from its back to its belly or vice versa, which the shark uses to orient itself in space.

Other fish, like eels can smell their way back into the waters where they were born.

As you see, it all depends on the species as well as the species' environment.
