  1. Could mean a distinct set of people at a given time period, or one entire race in all their time periods. There are usually defined time periods such as dark age civilization, bronze age, paleolithic, the enlightenment age, post modern, prehistoric, etc.

  2. Civilization is the cooperation of large groups of people not only to survive but to maximize comfort and productivity. Humans started to settle down and farm which led to greater numbers of people suviving and people found that cooperating gave more benefits.  Trade and communications became important.   People began to specialize in tasks and a person's value became dependent on their productivity level. Cooperation led to laws and manners.  Art and numbers enhanced communications. People began to think in systematic ways. "The conventional materialist perspective holds that cities first formed after the Neolithic revolution. The Neolithic revolution brought agriculture, which made denser human populations possible, thereby supporting city development. The advent of farming encouraged hunter-gatherers to abandon nomadic lifestyles and to choose to settle near others who lived off of agricultural production." "The Neolithic 1 (PPNA) began in the Levant (Jericho, Palestine & Jbeil (Byblos), Lebanon) around 8500 to 8000 BC. The actual date is not established with certainty due to different results in carbon dating by scientists in the British Museum and Philadelphia laboratories." "Cities formed as central places of trade for the benefit of the members living there. Benefits include reduced transport costs, exchange of ideas, sharing of natural resources, and later in their development, ameneties such as running water and sewage disposal."
