companies only hire people with experience. hence the question: how do people start their career in the first place?

do they use connection?

do they find employment through graduate employments?

get certification? (but few years experience is always a requirement)

just keep on knocking on doors till you find out some employer who's willing to give trainings?

  1. In my experience, its always been "Its not what you know, but who you know"

  2. If you don't have contacts, you often need to be prepared to start at a lower level and perhaps in a different job than you are aiming for.

In the past, I've hired people for very menial jobs (no experience required) who have said at the interview that their ultimate ambition was for a better job within the company - most employers are impressed by this. Once they were on board, they had a chance to show their abilities and in every case that I can recall, started moving up the ladder within a few months.

  3. Yes the good old quote - 'you need experience'  but how do you GET experience if you can't get a job.

Well first is 'just ask'.  Walk in to a hotel or whatever and ask if there are positions available.  I know where I live there is a major shortage of workers in the hospitality trade, restaurants are closing down as they can not get enough workers.

Other option is to take a short course at TAFE or another organization that will give you some insight and experience in a certain field, then of course add that to your CV or Resume.
