  1. babbling of course, some words start to come around 9-12 monthes...things like hand gestures (for instance waving arms while sitting on the floor and whining means 'pick me up mommmy'), learn how to point at things they want, know certain toys

  2. This is a **huge** time frame in terms of infant/child communication. There ability to communicate within this time frame ranges anywhere from only crying to using words and gesture. A three month old will cry if they are unhappy for whatever reason and smile if they are happy. They don't yet have to ability to deliberately point or even make eye contact in an attempt to get what they want (they make eye-contact but not to communicate anything). The ability to communicate increase as the child learns different noises (babbling) gestures such as pointing and even words or noises to represent word (e.g. meow for cat).

  3. as already mentioned there are a lot of stages of development in that time frame,  but generally through sounds.

You might like to check out the Dunstan Baby Language http://www.dunstanbaby.com/ which goes by the theory that babies have reflexes and when they add sound to that reflex you will get a distinct sound - ie when the baby is hungry they have a sucking reflex and when a sound/cry is added it creates a unique sound that means 'i'm hungry' same for tired, uncomfortable and a few other basic sounds.

you also look for body language too as the child gets older - ie if the baby is tired they will rub their eyes and kind of do a funny jerky movement.

Baby sign language can be taught from birth and some babies as young as 3 months have been known to be able to make some basic signs.

But in the end its all about knowing your own child - most mums will know exactly what their child is trying to communicate while everyone else has no clue!

  4. I think babies have their own language made of babbles. They seem to understand each other. just like when one baby cries, they all start crying.
