  1. spit

  2. a queen bee accompanied by her swarm of workers selects a natural nesting place . when the nesting place has been found the worker bees build wax combs in it. they do this by placing themselves in long lines vertically, the forelegs of one interlocking with the hind legs of the one in front so as to form a curtain hanging from the upper part of the next cavity.

during this time drops of wax exude from the abdomen of each bee and are collected by its free pair of legs. this wax, after being softened and kneaded by the mandibles, is used by the workers to build a vertical sheet comprising a layer of hexagonal cells on each side. the workers use propolis or ''bee-glue'' a viscous substance collected from certain resinous plants, for filling in cracks in the nest cavity and for attaching the combs.
