im not sure enough to give you something specific but im sure they gather mud or something else like that.. because i was watching a bunch of bees swarming a pile of mud and going back and forth from their unfinished bee hive..

They would need hammers and nails to make the hives and a saw would be just a bit too hard  so they settle for a simple nest in a tree unless a hive is provided for them by a human. I am a beekeeper and it would take far too long to explain the "in's and out's" of the life of a bee so I suggest you get a book on the subject.
