  1. Bell boots can help stop a horse loosing shoes  by providing padding between the fully forward stretched hind hoofs and the backward stretched fore/cannon during gallop and stopping the rear horseshow from 'catching' on the fore shoe.

Think of when a person walking close behind you treds on the heel of your shoe and the back of your shoe comes off.

Now imagine if you had a metal bell boot on and they tried doing it -it would slip straight down!

This is not, however, why bell boots are worn. They are worn so that if a horse is prone to overstretching, it will not injure itself by way of ripping the skin and exposing tendon by its metal shoe.

  2. A horse will step on the boot instead of the front foot.

  3. Bell boots don't actually stop the horses from ripping it's shoes off...it helps but doesn't prevent it totally.

Horses with long strides tend to overrun their front legs with their hindquarters and "click" their hooves. As they continue doing it, they start hitting the end of the bars of the shoes and slowly but surely loosen them up...

If you actually have a horse that has possibilities of ripping his shoes off you should probably have splint boots on them. their over reach is probably striking the cannon bone and ankle which is bad

  4. When they over reach it prtoect the foot and the shoe from being hit by the back foot.
