  1. When it is the season for a particular clam they spray their gametes out into the water and some of them get together. When the eggs hatch they are a free swimming larval form that looks for a place to settle down and grow a shell.

  2. In the marine environments they do what is referred to as broadcast spawning.  When the temperature and light conditions are just right the clam opens it shell a simply cast its eggs or sperm out in to open water.  Now there a thousands of clams of a species doing this all at the same time.  So, eventually clam sperm meets clam egg.  At times this is a dramatic scene.  There is so much clam sperm and eggs in the water it causes the water to be colored or shaded.

Freshwater clams reproduce differently.  Only a few species reproduce like their marine cousins.  In North America there are a few invasive species that reproduce that way.  Generally freshwater clams are hermaphroditic.  Each clam produces egg and sperm and can self fertilize.

  3. Aww, I love Spongebob.

Clams reproduce sexually. In most species, each clam is either male or female. Males release sperm, and females release eggs. The sperm unite with and fertilize the eggs in the surrounding water or in the gills of the female. Fertilized eggs of most clams develop into tiny, swimming larvae called veligers. Veligers eventually become mature clams. In some species of clams, the same individual produces both sperm and eggs.
