How do caterpillars become and why and how they make tents in trees?

It is called metamorphosis. Butterflies start out as caterpillars then they attach themselves to a tress and become a cocoon and then after a couple days they become butterflies. The way they make cocoons A.K.A tents is they kind of shed which makes those tents.
