Chains on car tires definitely help out the driver todrive effectively on  a cold and freezing road. But its adviceable to check your car's manual before putting on the chains. As some tires are sensitive, and chains can cause serious damage to them. Also, make sure that your state allows the use of chain tires on snowy roads, as in many states chain use is prohibited because of the damage it causes to the roads.

Yeah, they work on pure ice. I just used them to climb a hill of pure ice, worked like a charm.
