Question:

How do charities work?

They say that for every mile you walk/run/etc., you raise a dollar for so and so. Where do they get that money from? And whoever they get the money from: why do those people give the money away?

Better yet, could you just please explain how like an M.S. Walk for instance works?

  1. The money comes from the person doing the walk, family members and friends of that person who have promised to donate per every mile or whatever, and companies/businesses who have promised to do such. The organizations want lots of people doing the walk, because each brings a lot of donors.

Why do people give money for such? Because they care about the particular cause, because they know the person doing the walk and want to support them in their effort to help others, etc.

These walks/runs both raise funds AND build awareness about a particular issue. My grandparents participate every year in their town's local Relay for Life (regarding cancer awareness), and I have a friend who for many years was devoted to Team In Training, which raises money for treatment and prevention of childhood leukemia (added bonus was that she ended up in the best shape of her life from all that running!)

  2. they get a certain group to sponser a number of people. these groups are usually companies that want to do something good for the charity. when you walk a certain distance, the charity holding the event tells the company and the company sends them money.

  3. They need to find a way to raise money for there cause.. so what they do it's called Funraisers...wehn you walk people come and buy stuff, go to Google.com and search for walk for life.. it's a charity thing. Sorry I coulden't be more helpfull no that good at explainign thing.
