  3. I think they can check with your employer as to what your earnings were.  Your national insurance number will also show what tax you have paid.

    Firstly you declare it

    secondly your employer (or accountant) declares it

    They compare tax records and national insurance records

    They can get information from other government departments and compare information

    They can find out how much you deposit and have in your bank account

    They also have investigatory powers when they don't believe you
