How do ciliates get there energy?

  1. They seem to like ingesting yeasts and mold spores; probably bacteria and most likely other microscopic life forms. I have seen them become plump after having taken in dozens of mold spores. Their specific metabolic pathway for digesting them is beyond my knowledge but I'd suspect that it varies with the ciliate type. They do not have chloroplasts but probably have mitochondria.
