I know color blind people can tell red is on top, green is on bottom. At night I can't see the order of the lights.

  1. I have that problem at night and I'm not colorblind. Glasses did the trick.

  2. You need glasses!

  3. Being color-blind can make it tricky to match your shirt and pants, but it's not a serious problem.

People who are color-blind can do normal stuff, even drive. Most color-blind people can't tell the difference between red or green, but they can learn to respond to the way the traffic signal lights up.

The red light is generally on top and green is on the bottom.

  4. Color blind people still see colors except the extremely rare cases of totally color blind (monochromasy - complete absence of any color sensation).  They may have trouble distinguishing different shades of color. My father for example couldn't tell purple from blue. He could tell the difference btween red, yellow and green. And yes he did used to kid about telling the light color by top, middle, bottom.

  5. At night, there is always some source of light.

If there are no street lamps, then the car headlights should be enough to show the traffic light arrangement so you know which light is currently lit. Traffic lights should be shrouded so that other light sources do not reduce the effectiveness of the traffic light unit.

Typically the RED or STOP light is at the top, the GREEN or GO light is at the bottom and the AMBER light is between these two.
