  1. OK so the preoperational stage is the second of Piaget's four stages of development. It immediately follows the sensorimotor stage, in which children explore concrete materials with their senses. Now that the children have explored (texture, taste, etc.), they need to find out "What does it do?" In this preoperational stage, children will manipulate materials to find mastery and meaning. They will label the objects and maybe even think about the object though it is not physically in front of them. This is crucial to their cognitive and language development. Hope that makes sense.
