How do cows give milk even when the haven't calved?

how long after calving do they keep giving milk? do some give milk all their lives? if they do so "naturally", why use hormones?

  1. As I recall, dairy cows produce milk for about 10 months after having a calf and then are allowed to "dry up".

    Milk production partly runs in accordance with demand.  If the milk is being taken, then the cow will continue to produce the stuff to some degree.  However, another preganancy stimulates the production.

    It's not only cows that work like that when it comes to milk.

  4. Cows don't give milk unless they have calved. The reason you see cows giving milk at dairies, and no calves present, is because the calves are taken away from the cows when they are born.
