  2. plates move because of the convection currents within earth's mantle (when hot air rises and falls). when currents move towards each other, it pulls two plates together, causing a mountain or volcano of some sort. when they move away from each other, they cause the plates to move apart, creating a ridge or rift.

    also, ocean water acts as a lubricant which helps plate tectonics.

    as for the evidence, the most obvious one seems to be that the continents can fit together like the pieces of a puzzle (take a look at the left coast of south america and the right coast of africa) this suggests that they may have once been one continent, and later broke apart.
