How do customer loyalty schemes work?

It's a program, not a scheme.  A scheme usually means so sort of illegal or unethical behavior is involve.

A loyalty program rewards frequent customers with either a discount or reward for their patronage.  The customer gets something extra in return for their loyalty, similar to someone who buys in larger quantity getting lower prices.
