How do doctors make sure that your belly button doesn't untie?

  2. That's bizarre!  

    When we tied off my daughters' umbilical cords and clipped the excess, the part that was still connected to the naval just naturally shriveled up and dropped off a week or two after birth.  

    There was no "tying" involved, just the natural process of an umbilical cord drying out and falling off.  

    But then again, we aren't doctors.  Maybe they do something different in hospitals.

  3. after they cut the cord, they clamp it down (rubber band kind of thing) and it just heals, like any other wound.

  4. I'm with mackerel and cheese! No, seriously, there's a valve that closes off minutes after birth. If you cut the cord before the valve closes ie: when the cord is still pulsating---without clamping it first, the baby will bleed some, but after that, the umbilical cord just rots off---icky! Maybe you've got a hernia near the umbilicus, did you lift anything really heavy?
