They download multiple parts off the server.

So they get say 20 parts.

So if the server limits you to 100kb the download manager pretends to be 20 diffrent people allowing you to download it at 2MB

most websites split their maximum upload speeds among their open connections.

for example (uber basic example) if theres 100 people downloading, but a max cap at 20kb per sec.

lets say you open your download accelerator, it opens and pretends to be multiple people, so it lets you down 20 + 20 + 20....as if you were 3 different people... etc

Another type of "download accelerator" is one of those built in browser ones but really they dont accelerate downloads those just lower the quality of images you view, so pages load faster.
