  1. This varies with how early of a hominid you are talking about. The Austraoleopithicus were a few MYA and were small somewhat chimpanzee like people.  You can look up pictures of Lucy, a very good fossil found in Ethiopia for an idea of what they looked like. All hominids are bipedal, but they have slowly evolved to become taller, have larger brains, and variations in the jaw and dental pattern. Earlier hominids had more prominint brow lines, because their frontal lobe of their brain was not well developed. As this grew, the face became less crescent shaped and more vertical. Homo habilis and erectus both show a significant increase in brain size. Neanderthals had larger brains than modern humans, however they were technically larger so their brain to body ratio was smaller. And no Anthropology is not a factless subject. It is based off fossil evidence, dna comparisons, modern animals, and various other sources which makes it quite scientific and valid.

  2. Us modern humans are way smarter and adaptable. Hominids are smarter than modern apes in fact.

  3. All have developed some level of intelligence, as a matter of facts, they are in the top of thinker animals.

  4. The last answer is quite wrong, as the early hominids you speak of were all apes, with no evidence to conclude that we "humans" are related to them, also Anthropology is a completely fact-less subject from start to finish, all based on guess work and supposition.
