  1. It can be very difficult if not impossible.  Employers cannot call the Social Security Administration and ask for verification on the SS card the person in front of them handed them, nor can they check out the Driver's license.  That information falls under privacy laws.

    Right now, the best thing to do for the employer is to fill out the W-4 and the I-9 form and keep them on file.  Ask to see the proper identification that the I-9 form asks for and note the type and id numbers on the form.

    That's about it.


  2. Employers can actually verify SSNs match the name and DOB online for free through the SSA. In addition, if the employees provide the documents required to fill out an I-9 and they all appear authentic, there is no reason to suppose the person is illegal. There are very good forgeries though.

  3. When they ask for their I.D and they don't have one from the U.S.

  4. You must have a birth certificate or a green card to get a job.

  5. Social security card, documented work papers, background checks. In most cases, businesses  that hire illegals know and violate the law.  

  6. Employers who honestly complete form I-9 have documentation that the person hired is legally in this country.
