The speed of the lift is determined by the gearing, also in some buildings different lifts stop at even numbered floors and others at the odd numbered.

express elevators are different from normal ones by the break system and they are gearless type, that is why they are faster than the ordinary elevators

They go from the lobby to a certain floor only, with no stops in between. Hence the name express, much like an express city bus which has limited stops to get from point A to point B quicker.
