How do fads influence our society today?

In the 1970s, for example, one of the fads were pet rocks. So did that silly craze make our society's market more strict than vulnerable/guliable or what? Did it really have much of an impact as the fad-the disco? How did the disco influence our society today? I'm just saying it hard to tell if fads really mean anything for our future. What cultural impacts do they make, and does that affect our nation's political decisions? Just curious.

  1. Well, it mostly depends on the fad: lately, going green has been a growing trend among consumers.  This may lead to the government increasing awareness of global climate change and doing more to slow it down. States could start charging customers for plastic bags, which would be a cultural impact.

Yet the whole pet rock fad didn't really change the U.S. in lasting ways...Disco probably influenced night clubs and stuff that are available today.  Great question though!  Hope that helps.
