  1. Go to: http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/

they are the authority in png files.

  2. Are you using Microsoft's Paint program by any chance?

If you want to be able to save as a Portable Network Graphic (PNG), you really need a [much better] program to handle the file format. GIMP (www.gimp.org) is the first program that comes to mind but, there are other, easier to use products available as freeware or shareware. Paint Shop Pro is/was a fantastic image editor which can save as PNG.

  3. You should use a better Image manipulator with support for PNG.

I recommend Gimp and Paint.NET which are both free, you may find that Paint.NET is more stable then Gimp, but doesn't have as many features.

    http://www.gimp.org/ - Gimp

    http://www.getpaint.net/ - Paint.NET

Another option is to use IrfanView to Save your files as PNG, you can get it at http://www.irfanview.com/

The files doesn't nesseserily need to be saved as PNG, the good thing about PNG24 is that it has support for alpha transparency. Your images may as well be just as good guality, saved as JPG with the lowest possible compression.
