  1. To get how much your going to pay, subtract the % from 100, the multiply to the cost of the product. here, the percent is 38.

    100 - 38 = 62%

Now, multiply it with $68. Remember, when using percents, you have to move the decimal place to the left twice, then multiply.

    $68 * 62%

    $68 * .62 = $42.16

So you would pay $42.16 before tax.

    how did u get 0.62???

    Answer:

To do this as a math problem, we need to set it up properly...

    1) What you pay is the actual cost of the pants minus the discount

    2) The discount is the rate of discount times the actual cost.

This can be written as y=$68.00 - (0.38)($68.00)

However, if you are in the store, you might want to do this in your head and not have to pull out a calculator (I may be a nerd, but I don't wish to advertise it)

An easier way to think of it, is this....

If you are reducing the pants by 38%, you actually are paying 62%. Mathematically: reducing 100% by 38% is subtraction.

    100% - 38% = 62% which is the decimal 0.62

    Real Life Uses

In the store, "percentage off" is usually stated in round numbers [IE 30% off]. If not, round the number DOWN to an easy number.

If there is a sales tax [usually a percentage], you can compute that in your head too. Round UP to an easy number. Say the tax is 9.987%, estimate that tax as 10%.

Hope this helps you to use math when you are shopping...

You will know how much money you must have to paying AND

You will be able to see if one item is a better value than another.

    Good Luck...

  3. $42.16

    68 x 0.62 = 42.16

  4. Microsoft Excel has a really good guide on percentages

I've printed it to a PDF and have posted that PDF to

    http://www.fileshost.com/en/file/57489/E...

Just copy the numbers from the picture into the box and click submit, then it asks you to wait for 10 seconds then lets you download. No need to register

  5. $68 x (1 - 38%)

    = $68 x 62%

    = $68 x 62/100

    = $4216/100

    = $42.16
