  1.  by using their gills

  2. ...

  3. fish use gills, instead of lungs, to obtain oxygen from their environment.  as water passes over the gills the waste product carbon dioxide is exchanged for oxygen.  the amount of available oxygen in the water is not stable.  in order for fish to maintain homeostasis they must be able to regulate the oxygen levels.  fish have a variety of mechanisms in order to do this including changing their position in water and respiration rate.  the lower the temperature, the slower the respiration rate.  the higher the temperature, the faster the respiration rate.
