How many does it take to get a free flight? If I have a certain number of miles (15,000, for example), can I put them towards a partial free flight?

  1. It depends on the airline.  Check the airlines FF web page and it should tell you the mileage requirements.  Some airlines allow short flights for as little as 15,000.  Others allow you to buy miles to reach the required level.  If you need more miles and want them for free consider getting the airline VISA card and they will usually add significant bonus miles into your account just for joining.  You will also get miles every time you charge.

  2. Airline frequent flier programs are brand loyalty schemes designed to keep you coming back to one particular carrier for all your travel needs.  In their basic form they're pretty simple.  Mileage points are earned through travel (among other things) and stored in a bank until ready to be cashed-in by the member.  Prize rewards have a specified point value.  When a member amasses enough points (often referred to as miles since accumulation is often at the rate of 1 mile for every $1 spent at participating merchants) they can exchange the points for prizes.  Free flights (being one of the most sought after prizes) normally begin in the 25,000 mile/point range.
