How do gas hot water heaters function?

Question

Do you use more natural gas if you empty the tank? Or is it just the same flame all the time? I'm trying to save money but I'm not sure if watching the hot water heater will change anything.

Of course I do not try to empty the water tank as that is another bill I'm keeping tabs on.

it will blow up if you empty the tank! it heats the air and explodes. don't touch it-lower the temp to use less gas, but it won't save much.

The more hot water you use the more the hot water heater has to work to heat up the new cold water coming in thus causing energy use. If you can wash clothes in cold water do it and take a cooler bath or shower to save money on energy costs.
