  1. UK does not require a licence to "drive" a boat if it is just a private boat for just yourself. If it is for passengers then you require a licence for over twelve passengers and that will change to all pasenger vessels soon.

Nothing to do with size of craft.

  2. Well, here in the States you only need a license if you're transporting ticket buying passengers and its called a 'captain's license'.

But if you're 'driving' a boat on your own for no pay, then you don't need a license.

  3. You don't need one.

Each boat is licenced, but i don't get where the 40ft is realvent.

On the inland waterways no personal licence is needed.

  4. If you are thinking of a narrow boat for the canals or a sea going vessel you don`t need any form of licence to sail it, providing it is for private use only. If you are going to charge people then you do need to be licenced. British waterways or the RYA would have details dependant on whether you are on the canal or open sea.

Canal boats do need waterways licences which are dependant on the length, again contact BW or if you are on the Bridgewater Canal(this is a private canal) you need to contact Peel Holdings based at the Trafford Centre Manchester.

  5. Different countries have different rules. It's true that in the UK you don't need any kind of license at all, whatever the size of the boat - as long as you're not operating a commercial vessel, then the rules are different.

Be aware though, that many countries DO require you to be qualified, so if you intend to sail your boat out of UK waters you should (must?) hold an International Certificate of Competence. The RYA can provide the training and examination for the ICC.

Go to the RYA's website (http://www.rya.org.uk/) they have a list of approved schools worldwide.

  6. This question has confused me - what sort of licence?

Unfortunately in the UK you can win the lottery, buy a 100ft boat and head for the open sea without any training at all!

The RYA is the best place to find advice on training available for budding sailors.  They have drop down search available on www.rya.org.uk
