  1. If you're hitting your irons fat, then you're probably doing one of a couple things. You're either dipping as you start your down swing, or you're swaying forward on your down swing. This is usually caused by swinging too hard, which kills club speed and kills contact.

Swing easier and focus on contact for a couple weeks. You'll lack some distance at first, but you'll begin to notice you can hit the ball pretty far with out even trying that hard, and you won't risk fat shots or thin shots that add strokes to your round. Once you start getting the feel for good contact, then you can start putting a little more effort into your swing.

Take the time to learn how to make good contact with the ball first, and you'll notice how little effort it takes to hit the ball far. That's why Ernie Els can look like he's swinging at 60%, but still murder the ball because his contact is so perfect.

The feeling at contact should be that of compressing the ball, and not scooping the ball. The only way to learn this kind of contact is to swing easier, and make sure your timing is correct. Consistency is much more important that distance.

  2. Normally, there are two primary causes for hitting the ball fat.  The first is playing the ball to far forward.  If you imagine your swing as a full circle, the bottom of your swing (circle) is behind the ball.  If you move the ball back to the bottom of your swing (circle), then you should hit the ball first.  Additionally, further adjustments are needed based on your lie in the fairway.  Fairways are not always flat like the driving range.  You will also have to adjust the position of the ball based on whether the ball is above your feet or below your feet.

The second and most common cause is referred to as "peeking".  I have a saying "You can't hit what you don't see".  Many golfers will take their eye off the ball too early.  By turning your head early, to find the ball in the sky, you change the position of the bottom of your swing.  Your right shoulder will drop lower than what is required, causing you to hit the ground behind the ball first.  If your head and eyes remain on the ball until "after" impact, you increase your chances of hitting the golf ball first.

It can also be a combination of both.  The next time you are at the driving range.  Just hit a few balls without looking at where they are going.  Towards the end, you should see that you are "striking" the ball much better.

  4. Hit it a little thinner.

  5. Hi Chuck...I used to have the same problem you did with my 3wood off the deck.  Now it is my favorite club in the bag (except for maybe my new driver =)....anyways what i did is just kept my head down which helped keep my shoulder in the correct position, instead of dropping the right one and hitting it fat.  And the other thing i did was swing easier, even though it seemed like a far way, i had to trust that my swing and ball contact would do all the work for me, which it did.  I find that the easier i swing with the longer clubs, the better it goes.  When people say, "let the club do the work" do exactly that.

  6. Practice, practice, practice....  Maybe you are not contacting the ball as you should.  Why dont you go take a lesson from a good pro and for sure he will help you drive it further...   Good luck Grant M in Pennsylvania
