it seriously cracked into millions of pieces by itself. it sounded like someone hit a window with a baseball but both me and my roommates were no where near it just heard it looked into the bathroom to investigate. what the noise was .. and we just all stared at it as it cracked. now i need an explanation other than a ghost did it, so i do not get charged

  1. I have had a somewhat similar experience.

The glass doors are tempered. It is part of the manufacturing process to make them into safety glass. Sometimes

the manufacturer lets them cool down too fast during the

process and then they will later shatter spontaneously.

Even if it is a rare occurrence.

People that work in the industry know this.

In my case I got reimbursed by the insurance.

  2. All very good answers, i would just like to add one thing.  the actual tempering process is a very tricky thing.  when glass is tempered it goes through a molecular change.  this in turns make tempered glass unstable.  and it puts a lot of pressure on the glass, which is why when it breaks it "explodes".  tempered glass is four times stronger than annealed glass, but only on the face of the glass, all it takes is a little tap on the edge and it explodes

  3. It might have got a little pressure during installation or a s***w in the wrong spot that was applied to tight......I saw it happen once in a corner shower...hot and cold showers and pressure in the wrong spot and Bang.......good luck

  4. That's very odd...  perhaps if there were alot of temperature variations, the expanding and contracting metal frame could have stressed the glass untill it finally shattered, but theoretical scientific analysis from someone without a PhD would probably not be very convincing to the landlord.  I don't think glass shower doors are too expensive, though.
