How do hairdressers actually thin your hair?

When I went, they had these combs with the blades on it and it was so PAINFUL! I have VERY thick hair.

They take a Razor or Thinning Shears and sort of 'Drag' it threw your hair, taking length from your hair...Kinda hard to explain,
