  2. The two hormones in the contraceptive pill are oestrogen and progesterone.

    In the body oestrogen is involved in repair of the endometrium lining of the uterus and progesterone thickens the lining with blood vessels for a potential pregnancy.

    High levels of oestogen and progesterone have an inhibitory effect on the pituitary gland, preventing the release of FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone). This prevents FSH stimulating the maturing of a Graafian follicle to an ovum in the ovary.
